BMW 3-LITRE TWIN-TURBO CROWNED INTERNATIONAL ENGINE OF THE YEAR FOR SECOND TIME
• BMW 3-litre engine scoops International Engine of the Year title for second consecutive year
• Greener, smaller displacement turbocharged engines win seven of the 11 categories…
• …but power and performance still rule with the winners generating a combined 3,376bhp!
BMW has once again put on a dominant display at the tenth annual International Engine of the Year Awards at the Engine Expo 2008 in Stuttgart, Germany, on May 7th. BMW secured no less than six category wins, including the prestigious overall title of ‘International Engine of the Year 2008’ for its outstanding 3-litre twin-turbo engine.
The powerful BMW unit was one of seven engines to triumph in the 2008 Awards that use turbocharging to achieve high power output from smaller displacement engines that use less fuel and produce less CO2.
Indeed, another BMW class-winner was its 2-litre Diesel Twin-Turbo unit, which thanks to its ability to sip just 5.2L/100km yet deliver 204bhp, scooped the ‘Best New Engine of the Year’. And the co-engineered BMW-PSA 1.6-litre Turbo engine with a strong 175bhp also won the keenly contested 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre category.
Announced in July 2002, the co-operation between PSA Peugeot Citroën and BMW Group has applied the strengths of each partner to successfully solve the conflict between advanced engine technologies and cost pressures in the small and compact car segment.
All major components for these engines are made at a dedicated €330 million, 60,000m2 production facility at PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Française de Mécanique plant in Douvrin, Northern France. PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Charleville and Mulhouse Metallurgy Division plants supply the raw castings, whilst final assembly is carried out at Douvrin for Peugeot and Citroën models.
Peter Langen, BMW’s director of powertrain who also witnessed his engines top the 3- to 4-litre and Above 4-litre categories, commented: “BMW rightly views these awards as the highest industry recognition of its outstanding achievements in engine technology and manufacturing. It is an honour for our 3-litre twin- turbo engine to have secured the highest accolade for the second year running, and we are truly delighted that so many of our other engines have been judged as class-leading.”
Volkswagen's dual charged TSI engines have won the "International Engine of the Year Award" in the category “1 litre to 1.4 litres”. It is no coincidence that the 103 kW (140 PS) and 125 kW (170 PS) TSI’s, which are charged by both a turbocharger and a supercharger, are among the most efficient petrol engines in the world. The motto for these engines is "maximum dynamics with minimum fuel consumption".
Dr Rüdiger Szengel, Head of Petrol Engine Development, accepted the award for Volkswagen commenting, ‘Our TSI engines have set the standard since their introduction in the performance class of 90 kW to 125 kW. They achieve new levels of economy for petrol engines while providing performance that offers real fun. We take it as a compliment to the entire development team that our TSI has won again in the displacement class to 1.4 litres.’
TSI engines are already powering diverse models in ten Volkswagen families. The petrol direct injection engines between 90 kW (122 PS) and 169 kW (230 PS) cover the entire range from Golf to the recently introduced Passat CC. What's more, the new Scirocco will be off to a running start in 2008 with TSI engines. In the 122 PS version, it requires only 6.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it one of the world's most economical sports cars.
The Awards, which are judged by 65 motoring journalists from 32 countries from four continents, also rewarded a variety of other manufacturers for engine excellence across a number of different categories. The Volkswagen/Audi Group, Toyota, Porsche and Subaru were all worthy category winners.
