A compulsory purchase for motor sports and classic car fans.

Need to escape those memories of those 2008 stock market falls, the financial crisis and the credit crunch? Are you tired of hearing about those January sales, some of which started at the beginning of December? Well, here is the perfect medicine for those historic motor sport enthusiasts – a DVD set with six hours of unadulterated historic motor racing pleasure, ideal for those frosty evenings in front of the fire.

Originally shown on Dave TV, the GT Racer series captures the essence of historic motor sport as it was back in the 1960s, that is, top level racing involving gentlemen drivers with all the competitive spirit. For the first time in motor sports, television captured that one essential ingredient Formula One never quite managed to convey – the sheer joyous delight of driving exotic machinery extremely fast against a bunch of like-minded lunatics.

GT Racer and its sister DVD, Shaken & Stirred, show the Astons, Cobras, Ferraris, Jaguars and Porsches as they used to be raced, doorhandle-to-doorhandle, around some of the most stunning tracks in the world. An interesting difference is highlighted between the historic racing scene on the two sides of the Atlantic. The American scene is far more gentile and controlled where even a slight off-track excursion is brought before race control, while in Europe the cars are driven to their limits with some argy-bargy fully expected.

If there is any criticism to be levelled at all, it would perhaps be to mention the quality of the filming, which is quite shaky on occasion. As a TV or film series, the whole package would have benefited from some research into the different marques giving some history of each manufacturer, and with a bit of contemporary footage thrown in, one would get a better feel of what it was actually like to race these cars in the 1960s. One is left with the impression that this is little more than a “rich boy’s club” where the cars are prepared to such a level and at such expense, that one would need a budget to run the cars for a year equivalent to the national GDP of an average Central American country.

However, any warm-blooded motor racing enthusiast would soon see past such minor irritants, becoming totally absorbed in the heat and the exhilarating action of the movies. One can almost smell the intoxicating whiff of racing fuel and to see these real racers in action as they were intended to be, is what it is all about.

Alexander Davidis, director of GT Racer and Shaken & Stirred, has captured the action for us to enjoy in the comfort of our living rooms, and these two DVDs are being offered at the SPECIAL OFFER price of £24.99 SRP. This is a must for the DVD collection.
